STEN-BORG = "stone fortress"

There are many "STENBORGS in Sweden, but very few in the United States. Many of us who live here in the US are not related. The Stenborg family name in our family first originated with Rodney's great-grandfather, Olof Jönsson Stenborg who was born in Stengård in Värmland, Sweden June 16, 1832. His parents were Jöns Olafsson (Stengård, Sweden) and Marit Clemensdotter (Utterbyn, Sweden). Olof Jönsson most likely adopted the surname, "Stenborg" from the town where he was born, "Stengård". He was a master tailor by profession and learned his art as an apprentice from his father-in-law, Carl Magnus Almström. That is where he first met Britta, Carl Magnus Almström's daughter..

Olof Jönsson Stenborg was first married to Rodney's great-grandmother Britta Carolina Almström, Ulrika's sister. Britta Carolina gave birth to Rodney's grandfather Nils Oscar on April 13, 1867 in Göteborg or Gothenburg, Sweden. Britta later died after giving birth to Knut in 1875 and Olaf Jönsson then married Britta's sister, Ulrika in 1876. About three-quarters of the Stenborg family immigrated from Gothenburg, Sweden to Oslo, Norway ca. 1880. The oldest son of Olaf Jönsson, Karl-Rudolph remained in Göteborg. Olof Jönsson died in Oslo, Norway April 11, 1904

Rodney's dad, Dan was born in Oslo, Norway on December 11, 1896 and immigrated to the US in Sept. 1912. Dan was born Olaf Daniel Eugene Stenborg, and used the name of "Dan" after he acquired his US Citizenship. Rodney's grandfather, Nils, however was born in Gothenburg, Sweden where the Stenborg family originated. Nils Oscar and his wife Eugenia Fredrika decided to immigrate from Sweden to Norway(for whatever reasons) ca. 1880. Dan came from a fairly large family of eight which included four sisters and three brothers. The Stenborg brothers were: Oscar Fredrik(aka. as Fred), Olaf Daniel(aka. Dan or "Danny"), Iver Waldemar(aka. Iver) and Henry Nils(aka. "Hank"). The sisters were from the oldest:Elvira(aka. Vera), Svea(aka. Marie), Nora and Ragnhild Elizabeth(aka. Betty). The last member of the Stenborg family recently passed away. Nora Stenborg Ross, who recently had been living in a nursing home in Exeter, New Hampshire, died of uterine cancer on April 12, 2001. Aunt Nora would have turned 94 years old on April 21, 2001.
Dan had several uncles however he only met two and they were Clemmens Engelbrekt, the youngest of Dan's uncles and Olof Rikard, who was a noted singer and possessed a remarkable basso profundo voice. ( It is believed that Rodney's singing ability was handed down by his great-uncle, Olof). Uncle Olof was known to have sung for the King of Sweden and had the medals on his tuxedo coat to prove it. Olof was the father of Gunnar, Nora and Judith (better k nown as "Theresa").

Lorraine and "Danny" Stenborg(ca1936).
Gunnar and Nora were still living in Oslo, when Rodney and his parents visited there back in 1963, however, Judith or "Theresa" had already immigrated to the US and had become a US citizen. Gunnar had a son, Ragnar who still lives in Oslo .He has two children from a previous marriage.

Great-Uncle Olof Rikard Stenborg

Dan's Uncle Clemmens also lived in the US in none other than Brooklyn, NY. Clemmens as far as we know was a ship's cook and was married to a woman of Irish decent. To the best of our knowledge, they had no children. Dan's cousin Gunnar also lived in New York back in the twenties and thirties and later returned to Norway. He worked as linotype compositer for the New York Post in New York and did the same job later with the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang It is interesting that Rodney also lived for a while in New York and that our newest grandson, Jackson K. was born right in Manhattan
