Rodney was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 29, 1937. The family later moved to right outside of Detroit in the suburb of Redford Township during 1941 before the beginning of WWII. Rodney first met his wife the former Margaret Ann Schwender during a 1964 Boris Goldovsky Opera Workshop at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Rodney first came to Houston, Texas back in 1974. He joined the Houston Grand Opera in 1976. His tenure with the Houston Grand Opera lasted almost twenty years up to his final solo performance in the production of Kurt Weill's Street Scene in 1995. He toured this opera accompanied by his wife Margaret to Germany at the Theater im Pfalzbau, in Ludwigshafen and during January and February, 1995 at the historic Theater des Westens, Berlin, Germany. The performances were also video taped in state-of-the-art HDTV by the Westdeuscher Rundfunk and the German/French arts Cable-TV channel, ARTE.

Rodney was also a member of the Texas Opera Theater and the Houston Opera Studio between the years of 1978-80. During his near twenty year reign with HGO, Rodney appeared as a guest artist with several other opera companies, which included the: Michigan Opera Theatre,Utah Opera, Opera New England, Chautauqua Opera and Opera Memphis. Before coming to Houston, Rodney performed several years in Germany as principal baritone with the City Theaters of Osnabrück and Oberhausen, Germany. Before leaving for Germany, Rodney spent three years in New York(see: New York Years) where he married his wife, the former Margaret Ann Schwender.(see: Margaret Schwender Stenborg). Rodney spent previously some time in Germany as a Fulbright student. It was there that he studied German at the Goethe Institute in Lüneburg, Germany before going on to Stuttgart where he then studied opera and voice for one year. Rodney graduated from the The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA where he completed five years in opera, voice and concert training

Rodney has likewise been very active with musical theater as well as opera. Going back to the middle 60's, Rodney and Margaret performed summer stock musicals at the Brunswick Music Theater in Brunswick, Maine(now:Maine State Music Theater). While in Germany, beside his operetta performances, Rodney got to perform in German with two American musicals, Hello Dolly and No, No Nanette or as the Germans labeled it, "Nein, nein Nanette". When having returned to the US from Germany and taken residence in Houston, Rodney joined the cast of 1776 during the bicentennial year with Theatre under the Stars, Theatre under the Stars became almost a regular performing vehicle for Rodney as did the Houston Grand Opera. With TUTS, he performed Drake in Annie, Rufus Poindexter in Best Little Whorehouse Uncle Jeff in Mame, Picklebrain and Grudgewick in the Houston premiere of Anthony Newley's Chaplin. Jean-Claude in the TUTS' revival of Phantom. Rodney's final performances with TUTS took place in August, 1998 during the world premiere of Zorro, the Musical

After 40 years (plus) Rodney said "farewell" to the performing arts as a professional opera and concert singer last November, 1999. To commemorate this occasion, Rodney sang his "Abschieds Konzert" or Farewell Recital on November 27, 1999 right during the Thanksgiving weekend. His mother, Lorraine and sister, Beverly were unfortunately unable to attend. However, his son Derek with his wife Tammy and newest grandson, Jackson were in attendance from New York. The rest of the Houston family were also in attendance along with selected invited guests. The recital took place at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Mike Ewer, who have been long time supporters of the Houston Grand Opera and who are our very dear friends. Rodney has now officially retired as a vocal soloist from opera, musical and concert. He will however continue to sing whenever the opportunity presents itself(for more details, see: Opera and Musicals Resume)
